The ancient five-fold purification science of Ayurveda — detoxify, rejuvenate, heal completely.
Panchakarma (पञ्चकर्म) — literally "Five Actions" — is the cornerstone of Ayurvedic therapeutic medicine. A systematic program of bio-cleansing procedures that eliminate deep-seated toxins (Ama) from the body's tissues, restoring optimal function of all systems. Unlike symptomatic treatment, Panchakarma addresses the fundamental imbalances of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha — providing lasting relief and rejuvenation.
Vamana Therapy
Vamana is the therapeutic induction of vomiting using carefully selected herbal preparations — the primary treatment for Kapha-dominated disorders. It works by eliminating accumulated Kapha from the stomach and chest, the seat of Kapha in the body.
Performed after thorough Snehana (oleation) and Swedana (sudation), Vamana results in profound lightness and remarkable improvement in respiratory and metabolic conditions.
Virechana Therapy
Virechana is a controlled purgation therapy designed to eliminate excess Pitta dosha and impurities from the liver, gallbladder, and small intestine through the lower channels. It is the primary treatment for Pitta-related disorders.
The therapy brings exceptional results in inflammatory conditions, skin disorders, and chronic metabolic imbalances rooted in Pitta excess.
Nasya Therapy
Nasyam involves the administration of medicated herbal oils, ghee, or herbal juices through the nostrils. The nose is considered the gateway to the head and brain (Shirasodwaram). This therapy purifies and nourishes the nasal passages, sinuses, and the entire head region.
Raktamokshana Therapy
The process of releasing blood from the body — draining, removing, shedding the vitiated Rakta (blood) is called Rakta Mokshana. It is the purification of blood through controlled elimination.
Methods include Siravyadha (venipuncture), Jalaukavacharana (leech therapy), and cupping. Especially indicated when Pitta dosha and Rakta dhatu (blood tissue) are vitiated, leading to inflammatory and chronic skin conditions.
Basti Therapy
Basti is considered the most important of all Panchakarma procedures. Medicated oils, herbal decoctions and preparations are administered rectally to cleanse and nourish the colon. In Basti treatment, administration of medicated oils and herbal decoctions via the rectum helps to balance Vata dosha, alleviate vitiated Vata, and treat chronic conditions like back pain, joint disorders, and musculoskeletal issues.
Vata, the primary dosha governing movement and nervous function, resides primarily in the large intestine. Basti directly pacifies Vata — invaluable for neurological and musculoskeletal conditions.
Beyond the classical Panchakarma, Ayurveda includes several specialized external therapies that provide profound healing for specific conditions.
A steady, rhythmic stream of warm medicated oil, milk, or buttermilk is poured over the forehead (Ajna chakra region), inducing a deep meditative state and profoundly calming the nervous system.
Annalepana involves the application of medicated cooked rice or grain preparations over the body. It is a nourishing, strengthening therapy that improves muscle tone, skin texture and overall vitality.
A specially crafted cap is placed on the head, filled with warm medicated oil retained for a specific period. This deeply nourishes the scalp, brain, and nervous system.
Herbal boluses (Kizhi/Pinda) made of herbs, rice, or sand are warmed in medicated oil and applied to the body with rhythmic strokes. Provides deep sudation, relieves pain and stiffness.
Fresh medicinal leaves are tied into a bolus, dipped in warm herbal oil, and used for sudation massage. The volatile oils penetrate deeply into tissues providing anti-inflammatory effects.
Kerala's rich tradition includes Pizhichil (oil bath), Njavarakizhi (rice bolus), Elakizhi (herbal leaf bolus), Udwarthana (powder massage), and Kativasti — deep healing therapies.
Warm medicated oil is poured in a continuous stream over the entire body while therapists perform gentle massage. This royal treatment deeply nourishes all tissues and promotes profound relaxation.
